The Sacro Monte di Varese route is about 2 km long, with an elevation gain of roughly 250 meters, passing through 14 Baroque-style chapels. The path is cobblestone and must be walked on foot; bicycles and vehicles are not allowed.
For those who prefer to avoid the climb, the historic Vellone–Sacro Monte funicular provides a convenient and scenic alternative. Departures run every 10 minutes from 10:00 a.m. to 6:10 p.m., Thursday through Sunday, taking about 2 minutes with a capacity of 55 passengers. The funicular connects the Vellone valley station with the Santa Maria del Monte upper station.
Once at Santa Maria del Monte, to walk the Via Sacra on foot, you need to start at the First Chapel, located just before the gallery, where the devotional path begins.
Alternatively, the Autolinee Varesine bus Line C links the city center to the funicular. On Saturdays and Sundays, buses run every 20 minutes, and every 30 minutes on holidays.
